1. New fglrx drivers keep config in /etc/ati/amdpcsdb. If xorg.conf is modified remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb and run sudo aticonfig –input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf –tls=1 only after this restart X.

2. You can’t enable desktop effects in some dualscreen configurations, but can start compiz with compiz –replace. If it’s done from the prompt don’t close it after the command is issued

In short a script like this:
#!/bin/bash
setxkbmap

with a link on desktop to click on it beautifully solves the issue
